I don’t know how it happened so fast! First he was there, and so quickly, he is gone. The presentation was perfect. The drift…one of the best of the day! Hell yea, it resulted in a sophisticated, confident take. Even the most elderly, knowledgeable fish would have taken that fly. It was that good!
The hook set was even better. Timed it perfectly, just the right rod tip raise with the perfect tension. So good, that fish was pissed!
But then…one jump, one acrobatic launch in the air, with his head and body shaking like Elvis Presley’s hips. That one last ditch effort of a violent thrash, and…

It’s amazing the time spent scrolling through Instagram shots and vids of people catching giant Golden Dorado in Bolivia. Some might say I’m developing an obsession. I guess if we are going to have one, this isn’t a bad one to have!

The crew from Phelps on the Fly (Instagram | YouTube) has made an incredibly cool video of a DIY Bonefish trip to the Bahamas. This film captures the journey of catching fish on your own, of course, but it also highlights the emotion of success, failure, and camaraderie between friends. A wonderful watch!

One Cause to Learn About
The Golden Dorado Research Initiative
As Golden Dorado fishing increases in popularity, especially among fly fishers, the need for us to learn more about its habitat, behavior, and ecology is important. Little formal research has been done to help this incredible species thrive and survive. This becomes of the utmost value if we are to continue to experience this beautiful fish on the end of our lines.
In partnership with the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, the International Game and Fish Association is working hard to explore and fight for the necessary upkeep and understanding to keep this incredible fish strong! GFW loves the work that is happening, and we believe you will too!
