Guys Fishing Weekly #50
"There are so many ways to be heartbroken on the water, that sometimes the joy comes from merely avoiding mistakes or bad luck." - David Coggins
Hey Guys!
Welcome to the 50th Issue of Guys Fishing Weekly!
Before we get started this week, we would like to ask for your help! In an effort to reconnect everyday men through the sport of fishing, we updated our referral program.
At the bottom of this email, you will see instructions on how to earn free GFW gear just for referring your friends to the newsletter. Anyone you think would be interested in the message we are putting out, is someone we would love to welcome to the community!
Thanks for being a great fishing buddy, now let’s get into it!

Annihilate The Angler
I read a insightful quote the other day,
“ Only to the extent that we expose ourselves over and over to annihilation can that which is indestructible be found in us.”
And it got me to thinking.
Fishing is a relentless exploration of one’s self. The journey from American cheese bluegill slayer to backwater Amazonian Arapaima Ninja with Jeremy Wade of River Monsters, is a long and challenging one.

Trip We are Dreaming About
The Driftless area in southwestern Minnesota looks to offer a perfect playground for the avid fly fisherman. While the area offers more streams than one could explore in a lifetime, the boys at GFW are ready to get started and at least put a dent in it!
What We Are Watching
Fly Fish America: Minnesota
This gem from @blufflinemedia brings us to the area in Minnesota known as Driftless. Most people associate MN with lakes…as they should! However, the incredible tributaries of the Driftless area in southeastern Minnesota are a fly fishing paradise. This wonderful film provides a stunning portrait of yet another trip to put at the top of your list.
What We Are Reading
Whether you are a novice, middle of the road fisherman, or one that fishes so often, you could start your own guide service (maybe you have), David Coggins’ book, The Optimist, has something for you. Through the descriptions of his experiences, he explains thoughts anglers from all walks of life have had time and time again while out on the water. This is his true gift…relatability. This book in particular covers technique, fishing for different species, but more importantly the life skills we can draw and use from our obsession with fishing.
Fish of the Week
A Bitchin’ little Brownie from @Lindsay_on_the_fly
The fish don’t have to be big to be incredible. This is such a cool pic from such a different view. We thought it to be too good not to share.
Strike of the Week
The build up for a prime take from @david.arcay
Coming up from the depths, this take is an absolute crusher. It always gets the heart thumping when you watch that fish rise from seemingly out of no where to attack a dry fly.
How nuts was that strike?! |
One Fly Pattern
Sick Dropper from @troutsociety
In the heart of the hopper dropper fishing in the Rocky Mountains, this beauty will no doubt put fish in the net! Such a clean tie.
One Cause to Learn About
Old Salt Fishing Foundation
Conservation plays a vital role in preserving the fisheries we share across the country. But education programs serve an equally important purpose for understanding the different environments we choose to fish. When these two components come together to serve a community, we should feel grateful. With the Old Salt Foundation, that’s exactly what we have.
The work they do comes from a rooted belief in the science of fisheries, and for 52 years, they have been working (voluntarily) to support that science in an effort to preserve what they are lucky to have. They run fishing tournaments for old and young fisherman alike, as well as regular meetings and seminars to educate the community. With GFW’s steadfast belief in the power of community, we are proud to feature the Old Salt Fishing Foundation this week.
