The Secret Power of Simplicity

There are moments in life when you stumble across something that epically changes an aspect of your existence. I don't say this in an existential way, but in a practical way. Life and all the shit in it can be complex, and if I let the complexity consume me, it leads to agitation and an edginess that isn't pretty.

So, I try to ground myself in the idea of practicality and simplicity when I can.

Episode 30 of the Podcast is Out Now!

David Coggins – Atlantic Salmon, Living Intentionally and the Angler’s Hero Arc

A comment we got on this episode: “This was an exceptional episode. You brought out the absolute best in Coggins and the three of you shined brightly too. Well done!!!”

Quote of the Week

“Music contains zero alcohol, yet it gets people high.”

-Michael Bassey Johnson

Trip We are Dreaming About

Yellow Dog Fishing

The Farquhar Atoll is the southern most in the Seychelles islands. Although it may be quite a trek to get there, the diversity of saltwater fish to hunt make it a fly fisherman’s dream trip. That’s certainly the case for the boys at GFW!

What We Are Watching

Hooked On Hope

Wild River Media takes us into the life of author and obsessive Salmon Angler, James Gilbraith. By highlighting James’ authenticity in being a writer, dad, music lover, and angler, we discover and uncover things about ourselves as anglers and human beings, perhaps we didn’t know. James doesn’t shy away from the difficulty in the pursuit of Atlantic Salmon, and this film show us the connectivity between angling and life. A fantastic watch! James is a true inspiration.

What We Are Reading

Herman Hesse writes a classic story of the journey for discovery in his novel, Siddhartha. What makes this book so wonderful, is the protagonist’s unfolding understanding that experiences throughout our lives create the totality of who we become. While intellectual methodology and theory provide insight, the events in our lives are what shape us. This book resonates as we continue to explore different experiences in our lives, what they teach us, and how we can grow from them. Just like Siddhartha.

Fish of the Week

Incredible Colorado Cutty from Mark @thedirewulff

Being trout bums, we can’t get enough of really cool shots of beautiful fish. This is no exception. Thanks Mark, as your photo is deserving of being recognized. Just look at the details…awesome!

Strike of the Week

Never Gets Old from @fly_life_media

We agree 100%!!! In fact, maybe we have featured this one before; however, it is worth watching again…and again, and again. Such a glorious hook set and launch that truly never gets old, as these are the ones we remember!

One Fly Pattern

The Psycho Prince Nymph from @_shetiesflies_

If you haven’t yet seen Erin Hyde’s tying videos, you need to!! She is incredible with the work she does, and this beauty is no different. A true artist, her fly tying videos set an entirely different mood and are amazing! We are big fans, Erin! Thanks for what you do!

One Cause to Learn About

Bonefish & Tarpon Trust

The Saltwater Grand Slam of a bonefish, tarpon and permit is a bucket list accomplishment for even the most novice of fly fishers. The fisheries that these fish call home see a lot of pressure from the angling community. The work of the BTT is an ongoing process in order to understand these ever changing habitats and do everything they can to be proactive in preservation and conservation.

In order to continue to grow knowledge and understanding, the BTT is committed to using a science-based approach to further protect these fragile habitats. Research is an important part to their success. Using important research data, coupled with education and stewardship to preserve these specific environments, makes this cause one worth highlighting. The GFW crew is all in on supporting the work they do.
