The Master of Unstructured Play
Back in my day…I know, I know…anytime you hear those words there’s an automatic responsive eye roll that occurs.
But seriously, back in my day, we had a shit ton more unstructured time.
I want to say unstructured “play” time, but as soon as I do, somehow it seems to lose credibility because we associate play with immaturity. And accordingly, immaturity lacks wisdom. Throw the word “play” into any sentence or situation and it seems to lose credibility.
Now, add in the word “unstructured” to the word “play” and most people see pure chaos! Images of kids jumping on furniture, painting walls with lipstick, and climbing up the fridge to get to the cookie jar on top.
For many, these visions bring anxiety and panic.

Trip We are Dreaming About
Backpacking into Hells Canyon, Idaho
I know, it sounds awful; however, we love adventure here at GFW. And we also love exploring new waters to fish. Put those two things together and you end up with a real opportunity to create an incredible new experience. And that’s good living! Put this one on the list of trips we’d love to do!
What We Are Watching
Pacu On the Fly
After discovering the Pacu, it didn’t take long to find some videos about these cool fish. This gem of a short film from Paul Pritchard and Fin Line and Fly productions, not only shows us some monster Pacu, but shares the beauty of fishing in Malaysia. If you like the sound of fly reels spinning from hooking big fish, then you’ll watch this one with a smile on your face. I did!!
What We Are Reading
The Wilderness Idiot
This one comes as a recommendation from this week’s podcast guest, Chris Lyford. “Ted Alvarez is a beautiful writer, and anyone who spends time in the back country, whether it’s camping or fishing, will appreciate and take to this book.” Ted Alvarez takes an adventurous approach with this collection of essays, bringing his readers along on his pursuit of fun in the outdoors
Fish of the Week
Beautiful Fall Brownie from @thecuriousangler
Nick Williams from @thecuriousangler created this incredible post, worthy of sharing with our community! The beauty isn’t just in the fish, but the sunset and fall fishing vibe! Thanks for this fantastic fishy fall catch.
Strike of the Week
A Gorgeous Pacu from @donjoaquinriverlodge
What’s a Pacu? A REALLY cool looking fish! The boys here at GFW love adventure and fishing for new species of fish. This one would fall into that category and looks absolutely stunning. Guess we can add this to the growing list of places to go fish!
One Fly Pattern
Rubber Leg Copper John from @flyin_bear
The boys at GFW keep a fat stock of Copper Johns, as they are beast for catching trout on the regular. And now Brad Schanz @flyin_bear has given us a sweet variation that will no doubt crush fish! Thanks for this beauty!
One Cause to Learn About
Project Hope
Being a global health and humanitarian organization isn’t easy. So many around the world suffer on a daily basis, especially after natural disasters. Project Hope offers aid and much needed supplies to the victims of hurricanes Milton and Helene, as people in these communities continue to rebuild. Families continue to need our help.
As part of the fishing community, fisheries and local fishing businesses have been affected by the damage caused by these storms. As strong advocates for community, the best way to help those in need is to donate money or time. Use the links below to help in any way you can, as communities begin the healing process.
