Mastering the Art of the Fishing Road Trip

As we have always been DIY fisherman, hitting the road to explore new places to fish is almost irresistible.

Yes, there are lodges and camps that provide guides and accommodations to ensure success and comfort. However, there is something incredibly satisfying and gratifying when you do the leg work to find water with your own resources.

And when it pans out and you are successful, well the feeling is unparalleled!

When we started GFW, the idea for a weekend fishing with the boys was steeped in it’s affordability. None of us had the money for swanky places. But we still wanted that lodge like experience for ourselves.

So, our DIY spirit crafts our core philosophy and approach to fishing. We like to be self sufficient. And there is no better way to do this than hitting the open road to find fish and adventure, which we hold dear to our hearts!

With 28 years (and counting) of experience, here are three things that will help you have a successful Fishing Road Trip:

Q: If you could only fish one more new place, what would it be? - Jack H. - Bismark, ND

A: Woah, heady question. While we don’t like to think about us only fishing in one more new location, we will give it our best shot! Today, our answer would be Belize, chasing Permit, Tarpon and Bonefish. Chasing these legends in the jungles and beaches of Belize would be a dream come true. A dream we hope to come true sooner rather than later! Ask us again tomorrow and our answer may change, but today we are dreaming of Belize!

Trip We are Dreaming About

mooncastanglers.com

Islamorada, Florida is an opportunity for a saltwater slam, and I can assure you that during the Rocky Mountain winters, us trout bums are definitely dreaming about warmer temps. Just looking at this launching beauty makes me want to hop on a plane!

What We Are Watching

Fly Fishing a Legendary Montana River for GIANT Trout

Brody Sanderson from @brodysanderson brings us a gem of a watch with this video. Yes, he is catching gorgeous fish after gorgeous fish on a world renown river; however, the best part of this video is that Brody shares it with his father. Every father dreams of times like this with their sons, and Brody and his dad capture the smiles and joy that such a trip can offer. Well done!

What We Are Reading

River Teeth: Stories and Writings

This book holds a special place, as my mom gave this to me during a particularly tough time in my life. It was a gift to help me gain perspective. David James Duncan is at the top of my favorite author’s list, as his writing style gifts me moments of out loud laughter, deep thought, and overwhelming emotion. Most of all, this book provides opportunities abound to reflect. Duncan uses the metaphor of the fallen tree in a river and it’s expansive change through time to understand the human experience. Every fisherman can relate on some level, as we love the structure such fallen trees provide. Perhaps, that is why I love this collection of essays and stories so much.

One Cause to Learn About

The Bighorn River Alliance

GFW believes in the power of building relationships, and it is this important value that stands at the core of the Bighorn River Alliance. They strive to work, build and maintain the important relationships within the reservation and federal and state agencies to protect the Bighorn watershed.

With any precious resource, mismanagement can lead to disaster. The BHRA understands that working together with fisherman, ranch and farm operators, and outdoor river enthusiasts is of the utmost importance to maintain one of our country’s most beloved trout fisheries. GFW wants to recognize and thank all the hard-working people at the Bighorn River Alliance.
